Today's letter:Dear Ms. Ling,
I am a huge fan of yours, and, admittedly, have shed many tears over your amazing work.
Every time you're on the Oprah Winfrey Show, I am inspired. The work you did to bring us inside the lives of heroin addicts last year was particularly moving and disturbing for me, as was this year's exploration of tent cities. And of course, your international journalism has brought much-needed attention to the issues of the poor and the plight of girls around the world.
On a personal note, I am inspired by you as a fellow Asian American, and specifically as an intelligent Asian American media figure. Growing up, the only Asians I ever saw on TV were Connie Chung (who is terrific, but there's only one of her) and the people in those "ancient Chinese secret" laundry detergent ads.
I know this might be a bit forward, but I would love to see you live someday. Is there any way I might be able to see you when you do your next taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show? It would be a thrill to see you up-close and see the people whose lives you are trying to help up-close (though I know I'd be crying the whole time).
Regardless, keep up the good work, and thank you for making the world a more enlightened place to live!
